Suspect arrested following Sunday morning search

Port Huron Police say a man wanted for an early Sunday morning domestic assault is in custody. Authorities say a 27 year old female was assaulted by her intoxicated husband in the 1200 block of Bancroft Street shortly before 4am Sunday. The suspect, believed to be armed with a hunting rifle, left the home prompting a search of the neighborhood. The victim was also able to flee the house and is recovering from minor injuries.

About 20 minutes later, officers heard the sound of a gunshot and issued a public safety alert via text and phone call to area residents advising them to stay indoors. The suspect was found exiting a neighbor’s garage in the 1100 block of Bancroft Street shortly before 8am Sunday morning and was taken into custody and the safety alert was canceled.

The suspect was identified as 29 year old Andrew Shawn Benjamin and was in possession of a firearm at the time of his arrest. He is expected to face domestic violence and felonious assault charges with additional charges pending. Benjamin is currently lodged in the St. Clair County jail.
