Ballot askings for public safety, parks, and the sale of the Municipal Office Center were all approved by city voters Tuesday. Unofficial election results from the Port Huron City Clerk’s office show all three proposals passing with wide margins. Voters approved a 3-mill tax for police and fire services by 80%, with just over 2000 yes votes. A 1-mill tax for parks and recreation was approved by 78%, or approximately 1950 yes votes. A third proposal which would authorize the city to sell the building that currently houses city hall and the police department passed by 66% or approximately 1700 yes votes. In a statement provided to WPHM, City Manager James Freed says, “There are several vacant commercial buildings that are more conservative and more appropriate for government. Our waterfront buildings should serve as keynote economic drivers, which expand our tax base and provide jobs, not governmental office space.”
