Michigan’s Attorney General says the credit customers get for sitting in the dark is too little and too much of a hassle to get. Dana Nessel sent a letter to the Michigan Public Service Commission, the board that regulates utilities in the state, asking it to consider upping the rate above the current $25 and setting it up so customers don’t have to apply for the credit. Nessel says many homes have smart meters and the utility already knows when the power it out. Meanwhile, the chairwoman of the M.P.S.C. says it was looking into the issue before the recent outages knocked out the power to hundreds of thousands or several days.
