Officials Saturday dedicated a new monument to the first all African American pilots who died during World War II training exercises in Michigan. Located near the Blue Water Bridge, the Tuskegee Airmen memorial honors the 15 airmen who were killed during training in Michigan, including five who crashed in either the St. Clair River or Lake Huron. Jay Haigler of Diving With a Purpose helped to recover pieces of two of those wrecks and says work continues to find the other three. Surviving family members of some of the victims attended Saturday’s event which was part of a three day celebration that recognized the accomplishments of America’s first Black military pilots.
