Downtown grocery store pushes through pandemic setbacks

The owners of Country Style Marketplace say they are navigating pandemic fueled supply shortages and inflation as they work to open their new downtown Port Huron location. Originally planned to open late fall – and later delayed until this month – Owner Steve Fernandez asks for the public’s patience as they work diligently to put the equipment and staffing in place in order to get the store open.

“We were at the mercy of several things that really we had zero control over, obviously a pandemic is not the time to start a major project like this,” Fernandez told WPHM. He says some materials are in short supply and others are much more expensive than they once were.

Fernandez says if all goes as plan, there could be a soft open next month for the downtown location, with a grand opening sometime this spring. He assures customers that the Fort Gratiot Country Style Marketplace will continue to be open once the downtown store comes online. One thing he says will be different about the downtown location will be a lack of plastic shopping bags, with only paper or reusable bags will be available in the store.
