The St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office is closing area highway entrances due to the long backup of trucks waiting to cross the Blue Water Bridge. Sheriff Mat King tells WPHM that authorities have blocked all eastbound on ramps to I-94 in St. Clair County. Additionally, eastbound entrances to I-69 are closed from M-19 in Emmett east to Port Huron. King says the measures are being taken to prevent citizens from being stranded on area highways due to the backups.

“Most of the truckers know what’s going on, they’re communicating with each other and authorities,” said King Wednesday. “We don’t want citizens getting caught up in that traffic and running out of fuel or food or water.”

King says he has been in contact with authorities on the Ontario side of the bridge who have indicated that there could be a protest in Sarnia similar to that which closed the bridge in Windsor. If that happens, says King, traffic could be brought to a standstill. All off ramps remain open on both I-69 and I-94 and the current wait time at the bridge is in excess of four hours.
