Port Huron’s local State Representative says he is in favor of suspending the state gas tax in order to give much needed relief at the pump to Michigan drivers. Andrew Beeler voted in favor of a plan to suspend the state tax for six months starting April 1st. Drivers pay approximately 27-cents a gallon in state taxes which are fixed into the cost per gallon at the pump. By pausing collection of the tax, Beeler says Michigan drivers would save about $750-million over the six-month period. Earlier this week, Governor Whitmer supported the suspension of the Federal gas tax, but Republicans say that doesn’t go far enough, as it would only account for an 18-cent per gallon savings at the pump. The proposal would now need approval by the state senate and the governor’s office.
