Today’s test of the county wide tornado siren system has been canceled due to the actual threat of severe weather. There will still be an EAS test on radio and television stations.

It’s severe weather awareness week in Michigan. St. Clair County Director of Homeland Security and Emergency Management Justin Westmiller is reminding residents that the change in seasons means an increased risk of severe storms, including tornados. He also is reminding residents of the difference between a tornado watch and tornado warning.

“A watch means conditions are right for a potential tornado during that watch period,” says Westmiller. “When a warning is put out, take cover immediately in either a basement or the lowest most central area of your home.”

A statewide tornado drill will take place Wednesday at 1pm. Westmiller says the broadcast Emergency Alert System and the county’s tornado siren network will be activated for the drill.
