The Michigan Department of Transportation is looking at rebuilding a major section of roadway in downtown Port Huron. Huron Avenue, part of the I-94/I-69 Business Loop, is slated to be reconstructed between the Military Street Bridge and Glenwood Avenue in the coming years. MDOT project manager Tom Anderson was asked by WPHM if there will be any changes to parking and traffic configurations as a result of the construction.

“It’s still really early, we don’t know if it will be significantly different,” said Anderson. He adds that a road diet such as what was done on M-29 in St. Clair is being considered, but that the drawbridge may play a factor in that decision. “Traffic would back up way too much when the bridge is up, I don’t think it will work in downtown, but we are studying it.”

Anderson says MDOT is applying for grants to redo the sidewalks along Huron between Glenwood and the bridge. If the grant application is successful, the entire right of way from business front to business front will be reconstructed. Additionally, the plan calls for new flower boxes and decorative light posts between McMorran Boulevard and Glenwood Avenue. Anderson says the project is slated for construction in the Summer of 2026.
