Elevated levels of E. coli bacteria have forced Keewadhin, Lakeside, Holland, Lighthouse, and Marine City beaches to close temporarily. Water samples collected by the St. Clair County Health Department indicated higher than acceptable levels of the bacteria. The health department attributes the elevated levels to recent heavy rain events that tend to be carry bacteria in storm runoff and waves. The health department will continue to test beach E. coli levels each day and will reopen the beaches when the bacteria levels are back within the acceptable range.
