Late last week, a 32-year-old Kimball Township woman was behind the wheel of a vehicle that rear-ended a marked patrol car that was headed North on Pine Grove near Kennelworth Drive. She attempted to flee the scene but after driving off the road, knocking down street signs, and driving over several lawns, her vehicle crashed into a tree which ended the pursuit. The driver allegedly showed several signs of intoxication. She was taken to a local hospital and her vehicle was impounded. A registered handgun was found in the center console and even though the driver has a permit to carry a concealed weapon, police say intoxication put her in violation of her right to carry. The Driver was arraigned on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, being intoxicated while carrying a concealed weapon, and fleeing the scene of a traffic crash.
Port Huron Police are taking this opportunity to remind drivers of several tragic instances of drunk driving fatalities in St. Clair County recently and that through the holiday season, thanks to funding from the Office of Highway Safety Planning, extra patrols will be out in search of intoxicated drivers.
