There’s a new Chief of Police in the City of Port Huron. Announced Thursday by City Manager James Freed, Brian Kerrigan will succeed Chief Joe Platzer following his retirement on Sunday. Speaking to WPHM following the announcement, Kerrigan was asked about what the role of the police chief is.
“Making sure we’re keeping up on training, keeping up on policies, that we’re delivering community service… maintaining standards and going in the right direction, always.”
Kerrigan most recently held the title of Assistant Chief, a position he was promoted to following Marcy Kuehn’s retirement in 2022. He has previously been a detective and held leadership positions with the road patrol. Kerrigan’s promotion is expected to set off a chain of other promotions within the department.
“With me vacating Assistant Chief… it will probably trickle down all the way to detective and the hire of a new police officer.”
Those additional promotions have not yet been announced. Joe Platzer had been chief of the Port Huron Police Department since 2018, and has had a career with the department for the past 33 years.
