The Blue Water Area is marked safe from a potentially devastating bug infestation. A live Asian Long Horned Beetle and it’s larvae were discovered last month during a cargo inspection at a Port Huron railyard. According to specialists with U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the destructive insects were found in a shipment from Romania and is the first detection of the invasive species in the region in more than three years. The Beetle is known for causing significant damage to various hardwood trees, like maples, and poses a serious threat to forest and urban ecosystems. Authorities suspect the wood packaging materials used in transport may not have been properly heat-treated, allowing the bugs to survive the trip to the U.S.
