Local groups organize as food benefits dry up

As the federal government shutdown moves into its second month, thousands of families in St. Clair County are entering a crisis of food and financial insecurity.

Local leaders estimate that more than 22,000 residents who receive SNAP food benefits will not have them renewed on November 1st due to a temporary pause issued last week by the USDA. WIC funding is also expected to be depleted within the next week. The impact reaches beyond benefit cuts, a gap of approximately $2 million per month is projected to drain from the local economy, threatening jobs and local businesses. Federal Employees which include military and border patrol staff are also without pay and will be facing similar issues, including 75 Coast Guard members and their families living in the Blue Water Area.

In response, the Community Foundation of St. Clair County and the Community Services Coordinating Body (CSCB) have launched a Community Assistance Fund to provide emergency support to food pantries and nonprofits across the region. The Foundation has already secured $25,000 toward its short term goal of $100,000 and is forming a committee of local partners to ensure funds are distributed equitably.
