Roadside drug swabs to be used across the state

A pilot program to help officers identify drugged drivers which was tested in St. Clair and four other counties last year will be expanded statewide. The test consists of a cotton swab used to collect fluid from the mouth of a driver who is suspected of being impaired. Officers say the device can detect marijuana, methamphetamine, and opiates. Mike Nichols, an East Lansing Lawyer who spoke to WPHM yesterday, questions the cost of the program. “I think it’s a waste of time and a waste of money,” said Nichols. Supporters of the program, which was approved by legislation passed at the state capitol 2016, believe the tests can help get dangerous drivers off the roads. Nichols adds that the result of the test is inadmissible in court.
