The city of Lapeer lifted an evacuation of the downtown area at 5:00pm Wednesday. Police Chief Dave Frisch says the evacuation went into effect shortly after 4:30am Wednesday, when all the manhole covers blew in the city’s downtown because gas had leaked into the sewer system. Frisch believes the spill was accidental, building up from a slow leak at a gas station. Officials say it is safe for business and homeowners to return and resume normal activities.
