The St. Clair County Board of Commissioners have named a new representative for the county’s second commission district. Jorja Baldwin, current Fort Gratiot Township Supervisor, has been chosen to fill the commission seat previously held by Karl Tomion – who resigned from the board last month. Baldwin was one of three finalist for the position, with Commission Chair Jeff Bohm saying, “I’ve always been impressed with her skill set… and I just think she’ll be a tremendous asset for the county board.” Baldwin was elected among the commissioners present at Thursday night’s meeting in a 4 to 1 ballot vote. The other two finalists for the position were Kenneth Cummings of Tri-Hospital EMS, and Robert Mosurak, a local contractor who had since withdrew his name from the running after the first round of interviews. The second commission district includes the northern half of the City of Port Huron as well as Fort Gratiot and Burtchville Townships. Baldwin will fulfill the remainder of Tomion’s term through the end of 2020.

The pending sale of Silver Trails Scout Reservation in Jeddo was discussed among the commissioners present at Thursday’s board meeting. Chairman Jeff Bohm says he has had several discussions with community members regarding the boy scout camp, with many hoping to preserve all or part of the property. “Ultimately that comes down to local control,” said Bohm, saying Grant Township officials will have the ultimate say on “what they can do and what they can’t do.” Bohm adds that “conversations are open for anything” and that county would consider assisting the township if they were to acquire all or part of the property. According to the Michigan Crossroads Council of the Boy Scouts of America, there is a signed purchase agreement for the property with Mid Michigan Materials, who is in the process of performing tests to determine the quantity and quality of gravel that could be quarried at the camp. There was no action was taken by commissioners regarding Silver Trails during Thrusday’s meeting.
