Port Huron City Council took the first steps last night to limit when fireworks can be discharged in the city. A first reading of an ordinance to set a specific set of dates and times fireworks can be fired was held during last night’s city council meeting. Those dates include New Year’s eve; the Saturday and Sunday preceding Memorial Day and Labor Day; Between June 28th and July 4th; and July 5th only if that day falls on a Friday or Saturday. Fireworks will only be allowed from 11am to 11:45pm on those days, with the exception of New Year’s Eve in which fireworks will be allowed until 1am the following morning. The ordinance could be enacted at the next regular session city council meeting on July 8th. Also last night, city council passed a rezoning ordinance for a property in the 900 block of Oak Street from Residential to Commercial in order to allow a new, larger Party Express convenience store at the location.
