CN Railroad crews and contractors are in the process of cleaning up a derailment that occurred early Friday morning inside the St. Clair River tunnel. According to the St. Clair County Office of Emergency Management, spilled sulphuric acid is in the process of being pumped out of the tunnel and the railroad has begun removing derailed train cars. At this time there is no danger to the public’s safety or the environment. Both 10th street immediately above the tunnel and 16th Street at the railroad tracks will remain closed to through traffic until cleanup operations are complete. CN says there is no timeline for completion but that they are making steady progress. An west-bound train entering the United States derailed inside the tunnel Friday, with nearly 40 cars jumping the tracks. One of the cars, a tanker carrying sulphuric acid, spilled in the tunnel. There were no injuries to railroad employees or first responders and investigations into the cause of the derailment are underway.
