New year could see the return of flooding in St. Clair County

Water levels are receding in areas of Southern St. Clair County that were under water for a good chunk of 2019. However county emergency management officials say those flood waters could return this spring. Justin Westmiller, St. Clair County Director of Homeland Security and Emergency Management says the best practice is to not remove any sand bags on your property, and perhaps, even add more. “If you already have any hardening materials, such as sandbags… leave those in place,” said Westmiller. “If you’re going to get any more, put those around your house.” Westmiller tells WPHM that Clay, Cottrellville, and East China Township are most likely to see flooding again this year. He also says other areas further up stream, such as the Pine River in St. Clair and Black River in Port Huron, could also be vulnerable depending on how much snow falls in the Great Lakes system this winter.
